MOSCOW CITY DAY 2014

In the first weekend of September Moscow marked its 867th anniversary with more than a hundred parades, markets, carnivals, concerts and performances of Russian and foreign stars spread all over the city. As usual, the festivities culminated in a massive firework display.

The first City Day was marked in the 19th century. The festivities were intended to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the founding of the city. The great emperor Nicholas I of Russia decreed to hold the City Day on January 1, 1847 but by today’s standards the day was celebrated in a relatively modest way. The city was decorated with festive lights and services for the glory of Moscow were held in all the churches and cathedrals. A century after Joseph Stalin ordered to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the city in a big way.

Starting from 1986 the festivities have been held annually thanks largely to Boris Yeltsin, at the time head of the Moscow committee of the Communist Party. Every year highly popular food markets were organized throughout the city. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the first large-scale celebration was held in 1997 with the support of Yuri Luzhkov and marked the 850th anniversary of the city. Since then Moscow has started celebrating this day with mass events, fireworks and various concerts.

Pharaoh GC has traditionally taken part in providing venue security during the City Day. We send our warmest congratulations to all the Muscovites!
